Staffordshire pottery, Dunoon Mugs, has told the BBC that rising costs are placing strain on the business.
Dunoon has reported that its energy bills are six times higher than they were three years ago and 20% of the workforce has been made redundant, while remaining staff are working shorter hours.
Following the closures of three potteries this year, Dunoon director, Alan Smith said it was ‘entirely possible’ that Dunoon could be next.
Alan said the increases in energy bills and National Insurance contributions made it feel as though the company was being ‘bombarded by all sides’.
Next week, the GMB trade union, industry body, Ceramics UK and Stoke-on-trent MPs will meet industry minister Sarah Jones to call for urgent action.
The sector wants businesses to be temporarily exempt from carbon emissions penalties as one of the most energy intensive industries in the UK. It is also calling on the government to subsidise energy bills.
