Coining Wedgwood’s 260th Anniversary

Among the five brand new coin designs recently announced by The Royal Mint this month was a £2 coin to commemorate Wedgwood’s 260th anniversary in 2019.

The coin was designed in house by Wedgwood, with the main image featuring an interpretation of the Jasperware vase that is arguably the company’s best known product.

The vase, created by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774, took around four years to perfect and is considered to be his crowning achievement.

“Designing a true representation of the Portland vase in miniature was an innovative opportunity for the team,” commented a Wedgwood spokesperson. “As the most widely recognised icon of our established English brand, it was the obvious choice for the coin.”

Josiah Wedgwood, who started out as a tradesman, rose to become one of the most successful businessmen of his time. He founded the company in 1759, with Wedgwood quickly becoming a pioneer for British pottery. Wedgwood’s commitment was to make luxury affordable.
