Brexit blues for indies

The UK’s departure from the EU will have a negative effect on independents’ business in the longer term according to 40% of respondents in the recently published PH/Bira Retail Barometer. A further 40% is uncertain of the effects.

Just 9% do not anticipate any effects, while 11% think the results of Brexit will be positive.

One Retail Barometer respondent comments: “We sell a reasonable amount to Europe so Brexit will be a pain.” Another states: ‘As a Remainer, Brexit is a nightmare and has had a major impact on supply costs and consumer confidence. The Government has created a cliff edge scenario that has caused a lack of investment in the country.’

* The survey on the health and viewpoints of independents was open to all independent cookshops and housewares retailers. For the full results of The Retail Barometer, see Progressive Housewares March/April pages 22-25.
