Amazon searches reflect drive for homemade

Air fryers, bread makers, coffee makers, stand mixers, pizza ovens and pressure cookers are all categories that are receiving increased consumer interest during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report entitled The Quarantined Consumer.

The report’s author Profitero (the leading global eCommerce performance analytics platform) has been analysing Amazon’s keyword searches and bestseller rankings. ‘Insourcing’ is one of the seven trends it identifies, meaning that instead of buying lunches and drinks out and about, in lockdown consumers are striving to ‘do it yourself’ in their own kitchens.

The report sites a fourfold rise in searches for bread makers. It highlights a breadmaker and Nespresso coffee machine as being among Amazon US’s current bestsellers.

The ‘insourcing’ trend is one of the ‘embracing quarantine’ categories that come after the initial ‘survival’ buying patterns of pantry filling and stocking up on hand sanitiser and cleaning materials.
