Remembering Philip Hart

Following news of the death on Saturday (April 9) of Philip Hart, retired managing director of Harts of Stur, tributes are pouring in from customers and industry colleagues. These reflect on Philip’s entrepreneurial and pioneering approach to retailing – including overseeing the recent expansion of Harts of Stur in Sturminster Newton – his contribution to his town and local community, his welcoming, courteous and friendly demeanour and his “wicked sense of humour.”

Comments include: “He created a go-to shop that is always kind, courteous and goes the extra mile to solve problems… His legacy is not only to be seen in his sons but also in every satisfied customer’s smile as they leave his namesake shop.” Others write: “A lovely man and much-admired businessman who will be greatly missed,” as well as “he was part of the Heart of Stur,” and “a great boss and an even greater man.”

Among the condolences to the Hart family and business ‘family’ by fellow housewares retailers and suppliers, Tim Yeadon, key account manager at Captivate Brands acknowledges Philip as “a pillar of the housewares industry,” stating: “Philip was an absolute gentleman of the highest order, treating everyone who was lucky enough to spend time around him with the utmost respect.”

At The Excellence in Housewares Awards 2019, Philip was presented with the Honorary Achievement Award for his contribution to the housewares industry. To look back at the Award’s presentation click here.
