Royal Mail proposes knives postage ban

The Royal Mail has proposed a ban bladed items being sent through all of its standard postal services, including its Universal Service. This is in reaction to new legislation in the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 (which is currently in a consultation period ending October 9). The Royal Mail ended its stakeholder consultation on its proposed postal ban last week.

However, retailers may be able to use Royal Mail for its safe and secure deliveries of knives to consumers in the future. Royal Mail has also announced that it is developing a new age verification product. If this comes into fruition, the age of the recipient of a package will be checked before it is handed over.  This new service will help Royal Mail’s customers to comply with the new legislation, which aims to ensure knives do not purchased by or delivered to teenagers and children under 18s. It will also widen the choice of online knives stockists when it comes to age verification delivery options.
