Sustainability is ‘most positive influence’

Eco-friendly products topped the list of positive influences on independent cookshops and housewares stockists in 2019, according to the recently published Retail Barometer from Progressive Housewares, produced in conjunction with Bira.

Insights into business influences and category performance are among revelations provided by the 15th edition of the annual survey, which can be read in full in the current Progressive Housewares [See pages 20-23].

In the 14th Retail Barometer (reflecting on 2018),  ‘Eco-friendly products’ had entered the top ten positive influence list for the first time at number nine. The shift reflects the important role of independent cookshops and housewares stockists in helping consumers find more sustainable solutions.

Moreover, according to 85% of Retail Barometer respondents, concerns about the environment influenced consumers’ buying habits last year (increasing by 20% since the previous Barometer.)

‘On the go’ food and drink storage/containers (including water bottles and coffee cups) saw an increase for a huge 67% of independents and remained stable for a further 30% – showing that consumers ditched single-use plastics, and made their own ‘take outs’ as well storing food in reusable containers at home.

Also reflecting a shift towards ‘home-made’ and a disregard for packaged food: ‘preserving’ was another strong performer in 2019. This category showed growth for 41% and stability for another 44%.

Meanwhile, the ultimate ‘hero’ product picked by Retail Barometer respondents was the reusable water bottle (various designs) from Chilly’s Bottles.
