The Range buys Wilko brand in £5m deal

Sky News has reported that The Range has struck a deal to buy the Wilko brand from its administrators, PwC.

Founded and owned by Chris Dawson, The Range has agreed to pay somewhere around £5 million for the Wilko name. The deal is expected to be announced later today.

The deal could mean that the Wilko name lives on as The Range could sell Wilko-branded goods in stores and could also trade under the name online.

The news comes after it was confirmed that Poundland bought 71 shops yesterday, which it will convert to Poundland stores. The retailer said that Wilko staff would have priority when applying for roles at the shops. Another 52 stores were sold to B&M.

Despite the deals, thousands of jobs are set to be lost as a result of the Wilko collapse. A further 9,100 employees were told this week that their jobs would be lost when the stores close by early October.
