Upstairs Downstairs reacts to falling footfall

The Shropshire-based indie has introduced a delivery service for customers within a 20 mile radius of the shop.

Having identified the drop in footfall on the high street, Upstairs Downstairs owner, Yossi Gliksman decided to act quickly to combat the trend. He said: “As they say, ‘if you can’t bring the horse to the water, the water will have to be brought to the horse’.

As a result, the retailer employed an unusual new member of staff – a delivery van. Using the van, Upstairs Downstairs is now offering home deliveries. Customers can call the shop or order on the website and the retailer will deliver the goods free of charge within a 20-mile radius.

Yossi continued: “So far we have been very pleased with the new addition to the business. Our outdoor furniture has been selling really well as we are able to deliver and so did BBQs and larger kitchen items, and of course wedding lists as you can see from the photo.

“This is the strength of the independent retailers – being able to adapt to market changes at a blink of an eye. Standing still and moaning about things will not keep the tills ringing, but quick thinking, changing and adapting could make a big difference.”
