Harrods goes back to its roots

Harrods joined the growing list of housewares stockists that have temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However it is keeping its Foodhall and Pharmacy open.

Michael Ward, Harrods’ managing director referred to Harrods’ origins: ‘Harrods began its journey as a grocer, and we will continue as a grocer. We take pride in serving our local community during this difficult time by keeping our Food Halls and Pharmacy open to the public, and will continue to provide these essential services and products until we are forced to close.’
Acknowledging the unprecedented circumstances, Michael commented: ‘Harrods has gone through many challenges during its 170-year history. We continued to trade and serve our customers during World War II, and only closed for a short period of time after the car bomb attack of the 1980s.

‘Harrods is a symbol of resilience in a changing and often uncertain world, and I know that our values will ensure that we as a business come through this next chapter.’

Home purchases continue via Harrods.com

*Other housewares retailers that have temporarily closed their physical shops last week include 349 TK Maxx and 7 Homesense stores across the UK and Ireland, and Ikea’s 22 stores.

* Marks & Spencer has moved colleagues from its Home departments to help in its foodhalls.

* The British Retail Consortium has a coronavirus hub for retailers at http://brc.org.uk/coronavirus/
