“Covid-19 has accelerated the adoption of built-in antimicrobial technology,” states Felix Charoenchitmun, business development director at JCP Plastic. In partnership with Microban International, JCP Plastic (an award-winning Thai manufacturer of plastic homeware products) developed the Super Lock range of kitchenware products with built-in antimicrobial protection, which improves durability and cleanliness of food storage containers.
Felix reports on rising sales and interest in food containers with Microban as “a growing number of consumers prefer containers with built-in antimicrobial technology to those manufactured from conventional materials.”
He comments: “I think that the food container world will rapidly move towards the incorporation of antibacterial qualities as the norm to help deliver added peace of mind. It will be very similar to the situation in Japan, where most food containers already feature antibacterial properties as standard.”
Acknowledging the wider adoption of built-in antimicrobial technology, Felix notes: “Customers also greatly prefer other food contact items, such as chopping boards, to have antibacterial properties, which will open new market opportunities for kitchenware producers.”
There is also rising demand for longer lasting products: “Many consumers in Thailand are also concerned about the threat of plastic pollution, which is driving the demand for more durable products.” Felix confirms: “Built-in antimicrobial technology protects surfaces from odour- and stain-causing microbes, extending the product’s usable lifetime.”
